Darlene Love - “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”from A Gift to You from Phil Spector
Unlike many of my friends and acquaintances, I happen to love Christmas music. I have always enjoyed the holiday’s because I love tradition. I like spending time with my family, hanging with their cats, and watching A Christmas Story a few times in the span of a day. I like that it’s one of the few days of the entire year where I don’t have to do anything other than simply hang out… and even if I wanted to, options are limited because everything is closed.
Whenever I think about Christmas, this is the first song I think of. In his heyday, that gun wielding lunatic Phil Spector assembled an absolute masterpiece of a Christmas album in A Christmas Gift to you from Phil Spector featuring the who’s who of 60’s girl groups - The Crystals, The Ronettes, Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans, and of course, Darlene Love. Unlike many Christmas songs (and records) this is something I feel ok about listening to any time of year. “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” is my favorite Christmas song of all-time and one of my favorite songs of all-time, period. Darlene Love’s voice is so soulful and dynamic and of course Spector brings it on the production end - gorgeous background vocals, sleigh bells, auxiliary percussion, strings, brass instruments, and basically anything you’d think to put in an outrageously good song. The wall of sound is huge here, as is his trademark and as such, sounds as warm and comfortable as you’d want a Christmas song to sound. Enjoy this song or remain a grinch.
